Sundarbans is a cluster of miracle islands on the Bay of Bengal.

Sundarbans form the largest delta on the globe in the estuarine phase of the River Ganges and is a unique bio-climatic zone in a typical geographical situation in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal.  This southernmost part of Bengal which is a landmark of ancient heritage of mythological and historical events and bestowed with magnificent scenic beauty and natural resources is internally recognized for its wide bio-diversity of mangrove flora and fauna, both on land and in water and is of immense scientific, anthropological and archaeological interest.

Special feature of the Sundarban Bio-Sphere Reserve:

The inter-tidal area of the Sundarbans Delta covering the biogeographic region of "Bengalian Rain Forest" was selected as an area of Biosphere reserve on the following consideration:

  1. Sundarbans is the only mangrove tiger land on the globe. 
  2. Sundarban mangrove forests comprising of more than 60% of total Indian mangrove form the largest nursery for fish and shell fishes and are responsible for the coastal fishery of the whole of eastern India.
  3. Mangrove plant association of Sundarbans exhibit the greatest generic/species diversity than any large mangrove reserve on the earth.
  4. Sundarban harbors a good number of endangered plants and animals, e.g., the Bengal Tiger, Estuarine crocodile, fishing cat, Salvador Lizard, Gangetic Dolphin, Batagur (river terrapin), Marine turtles, horseshoes, etc.
  5. It saves Calcutta and neighbouring metropolises from annual low pressure catastrophes, acting as an effective wind barrier.
